Etchojoa is an important town in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is the main town of the Etchojoa Municipality. The town was founded a long time ago, in 1613. You can find Etchojoa in the southwest part of Sonora. It is located at coordinates 26°52' North and 109°39' West. The total area of the Etchojoa Municipality is about 1,220 square kilometers.

A Look at Etchojoa's History

Etchojoa was first established around 1614. It began as a Jesuit mission. A mission is like a special settlement set up by religious groups. Its original name was Espíritu Santo Etchojoa.

Population and People of Etchojoa

In the year 2000, Etchojoa had a population of 56,129 people. This number comes from an official count. Etchojoa is surrounded by other towns and areas. These include Navojoa, Huatabampo, and Cajeme.

A large part of the population in Etchojoa is made up of Mayo Indians. In 2000, almost 20% of the people living there were Mayo. The municipality is located in the Valle Mayo, which means Mayo Valley. This valley is named after the Río Mayo. The river is very important because it provides water for farming.

Economy: How People Make a Living

The main way people earn money in Etchojoa is through farming. This is called agriculture. In 2000, over 800 square kilometers of land in the municipality were used for farming. This land was watered using irrigation systems.

A special land system called ejido is used for half of the farming land. In this system, land is owned by the community. The most important crops grown here are wheat, soy, corn, and citrus fruits like oranges.

Local Media and Radio

Etchojoa is home to a special radio station called XEETCH-AM. This station is run by the government. It is a community radio station for indigenous groups. It broadcasts in three different languages: Mayo, Yaqui, and Guarijio.
