Ethel Miller Terrell (February 28, 1926 – March 1, 1994) was an important politician from Michigan. She made history by becoming the first Black woman to serve on the Highland Park city council. She also represented her community in the Michigan House of Representatives.

She later moved to Michigan. Terrell studied at the Art Center Music School of Detroit. She also attended Wayne County Community College. She earned a degree from Baptist Training Union. Later, she received an honorary Doctor of Law degree. This was from Urban Baptist College in Detroit.

Her Political Journey

Ethel Terrell began her political career in the 1960s. In 1962, she ran to be a delegate. This was for the Michigan state constitutional convention. She was a candidate for the Democratic primary.

In 1964, she became a delegate. She represented Michigan at the Democratic National Convention. This was an important step in her political life.

Making History in Highland Park

In 1968, Terrell was elected to the Highland Park city council. This was a very special achievement. She became the first Black woman to serve on a city council in Michigan. She was also the first woman ever on the Highland Park city council.

Serving in the State Legislature

On November 7, 1978, Ethel Terrell was elected. She joined the Michigan House of Representatives. She represented the 9th district. Her term started on January 10, 1979. She served in this role until 1990.

In 1990, she ran again for the same position. However, she was not successful in the primary election. In 1988, she also ran for state senator. This was for Michigan's 2nd district. She did not win that election.

Personal Life

Ethel Terrell was married to Rohne. She became a widow around 1985. She was a member of the Baptist faith.

Death

Ethel Miller Terrell passed away on March 1, 1994. She died in Detroit, Michigan. Her last home was in Highland Park, Michigan.
