History of Etna
Etna was first settled around 1855 by a group of German people. The town was officially planned and named in April 1865 by Andrew Hunt. It was named after Mount Etna, a famous volcano in Sicily, Italy.
A small battle happened in Etna during the early part of the American Civil War. On July 21, 1861, a group called the 1st Northeast Missouri Home Guards, led by Colonel David Moore, fought against forces from the pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard. These Home Guards were helped by soldiers from Iowa and Illinois.
This fight was part of a bigger plan by General Nathaniel Lyon to remove forces supporting the Confederacy from parts of Missouri. After a short battle, the Missouri State Guard, who were mostly cavalry (soldiers on horseback) with lighter weapons, were pushed out of Etna and the nearby areas of Scotland County. Colonel Moore's group then went back to their main base in Athens, Missouri.
