Etna (which used to be called Etha) is a small, quiet place in Custer County, Nebraska, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Etna is located high up, about 2,802 feet (or 854 meters) above sea level.

What Happened to Etna?

Etna is no longer a busy community. Today, you won't find many buildings there. Instead, a simple marker by the roadside shows where the former community once stood. It's a reminder of a place that used to be full of life.

A Look Back: Etna's History

Etna had a post office that opened in 1885. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. However, the post office closed down in 1921.

Most of the other businesses in Etna, like the general store, closed their doors in 1931. This was a time when many small communities saw their businesses shut down. The local school in Etna managed to stay open much longer, finally closing in 1966.

What You Can Find There Today

Even though Etna is mostly gone, there's a special mailbox next to the roadside marker. Inside this mailbox, you can find a book filled with historical information about Etna. It tells the story of the people who lived there and what life was like. There's also a guest book where visitors can sign their names. It's a way for people to connect with the past of this quiet Nebraska spot.
