Ettore Scola (born May 10, 1931 – died January 19, 2016) was a famous Italian screenwriter and film director. He made many movies that people loved. He even won a Golden Globe Award for his film A Special Day in 1978. His movies were nominated for the Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) five times!
Life and career
Ettore Scola was born in a town called Trevico in Italy. When he was just 15 years old, he started working as a ghostwriter. This means he wrote things for other people without getting public credit.
In 1953, he started working in the movie world as a screenwriter. A screenwriter writes the story and dialogue for movies. He worked with other talented people like director Dino Risi. Ettore Scola directed his very first movie, called Let's Talk About Women, in 1964.
One of his most famous films was We All Loved Each Other So Much (its Italian title was C'eravamo tanto amati). This movie came out in 1974 and showed what Italian life was like after World War II. It won a big award called the Golden Prize at the 9th Moscow International Film Festival. In 1976, he won the Best Director award at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival for his film Brutti, sporchi e cattivi.
Scola continued to make many successful films. These included A Special Day (1977), That Night In Varennes (1982), What Time Is It? (1989), and Captain Fracassa's Journey (1990). He directed almost 40 movies over about 40 years! His film Passion of Love was even turned into a musical called Passion.
Ettore Scola passed away in Rome on January 19, 2016, when he was 84 years old.
