Eucalyptus minniritchi is a special kind of Eucalyptus plant, often called a mallee. It has many stems and spreads out, growing mostly in Central Australia. You can spot it by its shiny, reddish-brown or grey bark that peels off in thin strips, revealing new bark underneath. This unique bark pattern is called "minni ritchi". The plant also has oval-shaped leaves, pale yellow flowers, and cone-shaped fruits.
What Does the Minniritchi Eucalyptus Look Like?
The Eucalyptus minniritchi is a thick, spreading mallee. It usually grows to be about 2 to 3 meters (6.5 to 10 feet) tall. It has a special woody swelling at its base called a lignotuber. This helps the plant regrow if it gets damaged, like by fire.
Its bark is glossy and reddish-brown, with that cool "minni ritchi" look. This means it peels off in thin strips, showing new reddish or greenish bark underneath.
Young plants and new shoots (called coppice regrowth) have round leaves. These leaves are a dull, bluish color on both sides and can be up to 35 millimeters (1.4 inches) long and 30 millimeters (1.2 inches) wide.
Adult leaves are arranged in an alternating pattern along the stem. They are a dull grayish or bluish color on both sides and are shaped like an ellipse or an egg. These leaves are typically 18 to 46 millimeters (0.7 to 1.8 inches) long and 10 to 35 millimeters (0.4 to 1.4 inches) wide. They grow on a leaf stalk, called a petiole, which is 7 to 18 millimeters (0.3 to 0.7 inches) long.
The flower buds grow in groups of seven where the leaves meet the stem (called leaf axils). Each group of buds is on a single stalk, called a peduncle, which is 6 to 20 millimeters (0.2 to 0.8 inches) long. Each individual bud has its own small stalk, called a pedicel, about 2.5 to 8 millimeters (0.1 to 0.3 inches) long.
Mature buds are round or oval-shaped, 6 to 10 millimeters (0.2 to 0.4 inches) long and 5 to 8 millimeters (0.2 to 0.3 inches) wide. They have a cap, called an operculum, which is about 5 to 6 millimeters (0.2 inches) long.
This eucalyptus usually flowers after it rains, and its flowers are a pale creamy yellow color.
After flowering, the plant produces woody fruits. These fruits are shaped like a cone or half-sphere and are 7 to 10 millimeters (0.3 to 0.4 inches) long and 8 to 16 millimeters (0.3 to 0.6 inches) wide. They are called capsules and have parts that stick out.
How Did It Get Its Name?
The Eucalyptus minniritchi was officially named in 2001 by a scientist named Dean Nicolle. He described it in a science journal called Nuytsia. The second part of its scientific name, minniritchi, refers to its special bark, which is its most noticeable feature.
Where Does It Grow?
This mallee eucalyptus grows in different spots on ridges in the central mountain ranges of Australia. You can find it mainly in the Petermann and MacDonnell Ranges. It likes to grow among large rocks in open areas of mallee shrubland. It often grows with a type of spiky grass called Triodia underneath it.
