Euclid Tree facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Euclid Tree is a truly enormous tree! It's a type of tree called a giant sequoia, which are some of the biggest trees on Earth. You can find the Euclid Tree growing in the Mountain Home Grove, which is one of many special areas where giant sequoias live. These groves are located in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains in California. The Euclid Tree is so big that it's considered one of the largest giant sequoias in the entire world, ranking among the top 20!

Discovering the Euclid Tree

The Euclid Tree got its name and was first measured in 1989. A person known as a "big tree hunter" named Wendell Flint, along with Bob Walker, found and carefully measured this giant. They were looking for the largest trees around.

After their measurements, Wendell Flint figured out that the Euclid Tree was the 17th largest tree in the world based on its total wood volume. But things changed a bit later! Another very famous giant sequoia, called the Washington Tree, was damaged by a lightning strike in 2003. Because of this, the Washington Tree lost some of its size. This meant the Euclid Tree moved up the list and is now considered the 16th largest giant sequoia by volume.

How Big Is It?

When Wendell Flint and Bob Walker measured the Euclid Tree, they recorded some amazing numbers. These measurements help us understand just how massive this tree is. The volume they calculated doesn't include any parts of the tree that might have been burned by fires.

Here are the impressive measurements of the Euclid Tree:

Metres Feet
Height above base 83.1 272.7
Circumference at ground 25.4 83.4
Diameter 5 ft (1.5 m) above ground 6.2 20.3
Diameter 60 ft (18.3 m) above ground 4.6 15.2
Diameter 120 ft (36.6 m) above ground 4.3 14.2
Diameter 180 ft (54.9 m) above ground 3.6 11.9
Estimated volume (m³.ft³) 1,023 36,122
