Eugène Paul Louis Schueller (born March 20, 1881 – died August 23, 1957) was a French chemist and a smart business person. He is famous for starting L'Oréal, which is now the world's biggest company for cosmetics and beauty products.

Starting the L'Oréal Company

Eugène Schueller was a young chemist from France. He finished his studies in 1904 at a school that is now called Chimie ParisTech. After that, he worked as a helper in a lab.

One day, a barber asked him to create a new hair dye. Eugène saw this as a chance to start his own research. In 1907, he created a new and special hair-color formula. He named it Oréale. He made these products himself and sold them to hairdressers in Paris.

In 1909, he officially registered his company. He called it the French Company of Inoffensive Hair Dyes. This company later became L'Oréal. He also had a new idea for paying his workers. He believed in "proportional salary," meaning workers earned more based on how much they produced. In 1936, new laws in France made it easier for people to take vacations. This caused L'Oréal's sunscreen, called Ambre Solaire, to become very popular and sell a lot.

Schueller's Political Views

During the early 1900s, Eugène Schueller supported a French group called La Cagoule. This group had strong and sometimes extreme ideas. They were against communism and held views that were not friendly towards Jewish people. Schueller allowed them to have meetings at the L'Oréal main office.

Later, during World War II, this group's leader started a political party. This party supported the French government that worked with Nazi Germany. After the war, L'Oréal hired some people who had been part of this group for important jobs. A writer named Michael Bar-Zohar wrote a book called Bitter Scent that looked into this part of Schueller's life.

His Family

Eugène Schueller's daughter was named Liliane Bettencourt. She was married to André Bettencourt. Liliane and André had one daughter, Françoise Bettencourt Meyers. Françoise is now the head of L'Oréal's board of directors. She is known as the richest woman in the world and one of the wealthiest people overall. In 2017, Liliane Bettencourt was the richest woman in the world.

Schueller's Legacy

The main office building for L'Oréal is located in Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine, France. This building is named Centre Eugène Schueller in his honor.
