Eugene Barton (born April 27, 1880 – died July 3, 1922) was an American baseball player. He was known by his nickname, "Cherry." Eugene played as an outfielder in the Negro leagues from 1906 to 1910.

Eugene Barton was born in Normal, Illinois. He was the younger brother of another baseball player, Sherman Barton. Both brothers played in the Negro leagues, which were professional baseball leagues for African American players. These leagues existed at a time when Black players were not allowed to play in Major League Baseball.

Playing in the Negro Leagues

The Negro leagues were very important for baseball history. They gave talented Black players a chance to play professionally. Many amazing athletes, like Eugene Barton, showed their skills in these leagues. They played exciting games and built strong teams.

Eugene's Baseball Career

Eugene Barton began his professional baseball career in 1906. He joined his brother Sherman on a team called the Leland Giants. This team was based in Chicago. After playing with the Leland Giants, Eugene moved on to another team.

From 1908 to 1910, he played for the Minneapolis Keystones. He spent three seasons with this team. Eugene was an outfielder, meaning he played in the large grassy area of the baseball field. His job was to catch balls hit by the opposing team.

Later Life

Eugene Barton's baseball career ended in 1910. He passed away in Chicago, Illinois in 1922. He was 42 years old at the time of his death.
