Eugene Koffi Adoboli's Political Journey
Eugene Koffi Adoboli became the Prime Minister of Togo on May 21, 1999. Before this important role, he worked as an international civil servant for over 40 years. He was part of organizations like the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.
When President Gnassingbé Eyadéma chose him to be Prime Minister, Adoboli was not very well known in Togolese politics. During his time as Prime Minister, he faced challenges in trying to make Togo's economy stronger.
Working with the United Nations
Adoboli was involved in important international efforts. On April 7, 2000, he helped launch the United Nations "Millennium Report" in Lomé, Togo. This report talked about big goals for the world, like reducing poverty and improving health. Adoboli spoke highly of the report, saying that President Eyadéma supported the idea of creating a "world free from fear."
He also met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, on July 9, 2000. This showed his involvement in global discussions.
Leaving Office
On August 27, 2000, Eugene Koffi Adoboli stepped down from his position as Prime Minister. President Eyadéma accepted his resignation. A few days later, on August 29, Agbéyomé Kodjo was appointed to take his place.
Later Life and International Work
In 2002, Adoboli moved to Switzerland. He continued to be involved in global issues. In April 2010, he gave a key speech at the World Meteorological Association. He encouraged this organization to provide better information about climate and weather services to people and governments in Africa. His goal was to help African countries deal with natural disasters caused by climate change. Adoboli believed that African nations should work together to face these important climate challenges.
Later in his life, Adoboli faced accusations about how some government money was managed during his time as Prime Minister. He strongly denied these accusations.
Eugene Koffi Adoboli passed away in Switzerland on April 23, 2025, at the age of 90.
