Eugène Koffi Adoboli (3 October 1934 – 23 April 2025) was a politician from the African country of Togo. For a little over a year, he served as the Prime Minister, which is similar to being the head of the government's daily operations.
Later in his life, Adoboli faced serious accusations about how money was handled for a government project. He lived his final years in Switzerland.
A Life in Public Service
Before becoming a major political figure in his home country, Eugène Koffi Adoboli had a long career working for the world community.
Working for the World
For over 40 years, Adoboli was an international civil servant. This means he worked for organizations that serve many different countries, not just his own. He worked with groups connected to the United Nations, such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, Switzerland. His job involved helping countries work together on issues like trade and development.
Because he spent so much time working abroad, many people in Togo did not know him when he entered politics there.
Leading Togo
On May 21, 1999, Togo's President, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, chose Adoboli to be the new Prime Minister. This happened after a parliamentary election in March of that year. As Prime Minister, one of his main jobs was to help improve the country's economy.
During his time in office, Adoboli worked with the United Nations. In April 2000, he helped launch a special UN report in Lomé, the capital of Togo. He also met with the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, in July 2000.
Adoboli's time as Prime Minister ended on August 27, 2000, when he resigned from his position. The president accepted his resignation, and Agbéyomé Kodjo was appointed as the new Prime Minister a few days later.
Later Years
After his political career in Togo, Adoboli moved to Switzerland in 2002. He continued to speak about important global issues. In 2010, he gave a speech encouraging African nations to work together to deal with the challenges of climate change.
In 2011, Adoboli was accused of misusing government money meant for a construction project back in 1999. The project was to build homes for leaders attending a summit. Adoboli, who was living in Switzerland, denied that he had done anything wrong.
Eugène Koffi Adoboli died in Switzerland on April 23, 2025. He was 90 years old.
