Eugenio Sellés y Ángel (born April 8, 1842 – died October 12, 1926) was a talented Spanish writer, journalist, and politician. He was also known as the Marquess of Gerona.

Life Story of Eugenio Sellés

Eugenio Sellés was born in the city of Granada, Spain. His father, Pedro Sellés y Garrido, worked as a judge in the city. His father's job also meant a lot of travel to other Spanish cities.

Eugenio's mother was Francisca de Paula Ángel y Castro. Through her, Eugenio was part of a noble family. He was a descendant of Mariano Álvarez de Castro, who was a governor.

Education and Early Career

Eugenio first studied law at the Royal College in Granada. He then finished his law studies in Madrid in 1862. Soon after, he got another degree in Burgos. He started his career as a prosecutor in Extremadura. A prosecutor is a lawyer who works for the government to bring criminals to justice.

In 1869, Eugenio changed his career path. He became a political journalist. He supported the ideas of Práxedes Mateo Sagasta, a well-known politician. Eugenio wrote for many newspapers and magazines. Some of these included La Iberia, El Imparcial, and ABC.

Political and Literary Roles

During a time when General Serrano was in charge of Spain, Sellés became a governor. He served as governor for the cities of Seville and Granada.

Later, when the monarchy was brought back to Spain (a time called the Restoration), Eugenio changed his focus again. He became a playwright, writing plays for the theater. He was seen as a student of José Echegaray, another famous playwright. However, Eugenio had his own unique style of writing plays.

On June 2, 1895, Eugenio Sellés became a member of the Royal Academy in Madrid. This is a very important group that looks after the Spanish language. He gave a speech about journalism when he joined. He also led the literature section of the Madrid Athenæum, which was a famous cultural club.

Eugenio Sellés married Avelina de Rivas y Cano. Their daughter, Elisa Sellés y Rivas, was born on May 16, 1885.
