Práxedes Mateo Sagasta (born July 21, 1825 – died January 5, 1903) was an important Spanish civil engineer and politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Spain eight times between 1870 and 1902. He was always the leader of the Liberal Party. He was part of a system called the turno pacifico, where his party would take turns leading the country with the Conservative Party, led by Antonio Cánovas. People knew him as a great speaker.

Early Life and Career

Práxedes Mateo Sagasta was born in a town called Torrecilla en Cameros, in Logroño province, Spain, on July 21, 1825.

When he was a student at the Civil Engineering School of Madrid in 1848, he was a member of the Progressive Party. He was the only student who refused to sign a letter that supported Queen Isabel II. This showed his strong beliefs early on.

Political Beginnings

After finishing his studies, Sagasta became very active in the government. He served in the Spanish Cortes (which is like the Spanish Parliament) from 1854 to 1857 and again from 1858 to 1863.

In 1866, he had to go to France because a plan to change the government failed. But after the Spanish Revolution of 1868, he came back to Spain. He then joined the new temporary government that was set up.

Prime Minister of Spain

Práxedes Mateo Sagasta became Prime Minister of Spain many times. He led the country during some very important moments in history.

The Spanish-American War

One of the most challenging times he served as Prime Minister was during the Spanish–American War in 1898. During this war, Spain lost its remaining colonies.

Mateo Sagasta had agreed to give Cuba and Puerto Rico their own special rules, allowing them to govern themselves more. However, after Spain lost the war, his political rivals blamed him for the defeat. They also blamed him for losing the island territories in the Treaty of Paris in 1898.

Later Years and Resignation

Even after the war, Mateo Sagasta continued to be active in politics for another four years.

His government lost an important vote in the Cortes on December 2, 1902. The next day, he offered his resignation to the King. He officially stepped down on December 10, 1902.

Práxedes Mateo Sagasta passed away just one month after his last resignation. He died on January 5, 1903, in Madrid, at the age of 77.
