Juan de Zavala y de la Puente, 1st Marquess of Sierra Bullones (born December 27, 1804, in Lima, Viceroyalty of Peru) was an important Spanish noble and politician. He was born in what is now Peru, but at the time it was part of Spain. He later moved to Spain.
Juan de Zavala came from a well-known family. His father was Pedro José de Zavala y Bravo de Rivero, the 7th Marquess of San Lorenzo. His mother was Grimanesa de la Puente y Bravo de Lagunas.
Early Life and Military Career
Juan de Zavala grew up in a time of many changes for Spain. He chose a career in the military. He became a soldier and fought in the First Carlist War. This was a big conflict in Spain that lasted from 1833 to 1840. The war was about who should be the next king or queen of Spain.
After his time as a soldier, Zavala became involved in politics. This was a common path for many important people in Spain during that period.
Political Roles and Achievements
Juan de Zavala held several important jobs in the Spanish government. One of his most significant roles was serving as the Prime Minister of Spain. The Prime Minister is the head of the government, similar to a president in some countries. They lead the country and make big decisions.
He was Prime Minister from February 26, 1874, to June 29, 1874. During this time, Francisco Serrano was the President of Spain. Zavala took over from Emilio Castelar and was later followed by Práxedes Mateo Sagasta.
Zavala also served as the Minister of State. This job is like being the country's main diplomat. The Minister of State handles relationships with other countries. He held this position from June 6, 1855, to July 14, 1856.
Family Life
In 1839, Juan de Zavala married María del Pilar de Guzmán, who was the 24th Duchess of Nájera. They had five children together. Their children grew up to have their own families and important roles in Spanish society.
Juan de Zavala passed away on December 29, 1879, in Madrid, Spain, when he was 75 years old.
