Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eusebius (also known as Bruno) of Angers was an important church leader, called a bishop, in France during the 11th century. He passed away on September 1, 1081.

Eusebius of Angers: A Church Leader

Eusebius first became known as the Bishop of Angers in 1049. This was at an important church meeting, called a synod, in a city called Rheims. For a long time, he supported the ideas of another church leader named Berengar of Tours.

The Debate About the Lord's Supper

Berengar had a specific belief about the Lord's Supper, which is a special religious ceremony. Eusebius was respected by both Berengar and those who disagreed with Berengar's ideas. However, as the arguments grew stronger, Eusebius tried to find a way for everyone to agree. In 1054, he even suggested that Berengar agree to a specific statement to help end the debate.

Eusebius's Changing Views

Even years later, Berengar still thought of Eusebius as a friend. Berengar asked Eusebius to help stop someone named Galfrid Martini from spreading different ideas, or to arrange a debate.

In his reply, Eusebius said he was sad about the whole argument. He also stated that he would follow what the Bible said. This meant he believed that the bread and wine used in the ceremony truly become the body and blood of the Lord after a special blessing. This idea is known as transubstantiation.

Eusebius explained that this change doesn't happen in a normal way, but through God's great power. He also said it was important not to upset regular Christians with these complex discussions. This letter showed that Eusebius had changed his mind if Berengar still held his original view.

Influences on Eusebius

It's possible that Eusebius changed his mind because of the Count of Anjou. The Count was a powerful leader who strongly disagreed with Berengar's ideas. Eusebius did not defend Berengar against the Count's actions and often sided with this powerful ruler.

It also seems that more and more people at the time were starting to disagree with Berengar. Our information from that time is not complete, so it's hard to know exactly why Eusebius changed his views.
