Sir Eustace de Ribemont (died 19 September 1356) was a brave French nobleman. He was known for carrying the French battle flag, a very important job, in 1346.
A French Knight's Story
Eustace was the lord of Ribemont, a region in France called Picardy. Being a lord meant he owned land and had power in his area. He was a knight who fought in the Hundred Years' War. This was a long series of conflicts between England and France.
Fighting at Calais
In 1350, Eustace fought during the Siege of Calais. A French knight named Geoffroi de Charny tried to trick the English. He bribed an English soldier, Amerigo de Pavia, to open a gate for the French army.
During the fight, Eustace bravely faced Edward III of England. King Edward was fighting secretly, so Eustace did not know who he was. Eustace even knocked the King down a couple of times! Despite being captured, King Edward was so impressed by Eustace's courage that he set him free without asking for money. This was a great honor.
The Battle of Poitiers
Eustace de Ribemont was the French standard-bearer at the Battle of Poitiers. This major battle took place on September 19, 1356. Sadly, Eustace was killed during this battle.
