Eva-Maria Neher (born November 22, 1950) is a German scientist. She studies tiny living things (microbiology) and the chemistry of life (biochemistry). She started a special science lab called the Göttingen Xlab in 2000. She has been its leader ever since. The Xlab is a place where young people, from students to future scientists, can do exciting experiments. Eva-Maria Neher is married to Erwin Neher, who won a Nobel Prize for his work in medicine. Her Life and Work
Early Life and Education
Eva-Maria Neher was born in Mülheim, Germany. She began studying microbiology at the University of Göttingen in 1969. She earned her biology diploma in 1974. Then, she completed her PhD in biochemistry at the same university. Her research was about how certain tiny organisms make a special substance.
Scientific Career and Family
After finishing her studies, Eva-Maria Neher worked as a scientist at the University of Göttingen in 1977. From 1977 to 1978, she also did advanced research at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. While doing research at Yale University in the United States, she met Erwin Neher. They worked together and got married on December 26, 1978. They have five children: Richard, Benjamin, Carola, Sigmund, and Margret.
From 1978 to 1985, she worked as a scientist at the Institute for Physiological Chemistry. After that, she took time off until 2000 to raise her children. During this time, she also taught science classes at the Free Waldorf School in Göttingen. This experience helped her develop the ideas for the Xlab.
Founding the Göttingen Xlab
In 2000, Eva-Maria Neher founded the Göttingen Xlab. This is a unique laboratory where young people can do hands-on science experiments. She has been the managing and executive director of Xlab since it started. In 2004, the Xlab moved into its own building on the North Campus of the university.
Eva-Maria Neher has also shared her knowledge internationally. For example, she visited Moscow in 1999. In 2013, she took part in an International Education Forum in Moscow.
Awards and Honors
Eva-Maria Neher has been recognized with many awards for her contributions to science and education. Some of her awards include:
- The Niedersächsischer Verdienstorden (Lower Saxony Order of Merit) in 2002.
- The GBM-Kommunikationspreis (GBM Communication Award) in 2005.
- The Niedersächsischer Staatspreis (Lower Saxony State Prize) in 2007.
- An honorary professorship from the Department of Chemistry at the Georg August University, Göttingen, in 2009.
- The Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse (Federal Cross of Merit First class) in 2009.
