Eva Hemmer Hansen (born 1913, died 1983) was a talented woman from Denmark. She was a journalist, wrote many books, and translated texts. Eva was also a feminist, meaning she believed in equal rights for women.

She worked for a newspaper called Demokraten. In 1944, she published her first novel, Helene, which was very popular. Eva was also involved in politics as a social democrat. She cared a lot about women's issues and even led a women's group for the Aarhus City Council. Later, she left the political party to focus even more on helping women. In 1968, she became the leader of the Danish Women's Society. For their 100th birthday in 1970, she wrote a book about the group's history. Eva was also a busy translator. In 1975, she released a new Danish version of all the books by the famous writer Charles Dickens.

Early Life and Education

Eva Tjuba Hemmer Hansen was born in Aalborg, Denmark, on January 2, 1913. Her father, Jacob Peter Hemmer Hansen, was an editor. Her mother was Elna Cecilie Louise Højby Nielsen.

In December 1939, Eva married Kjeld Elsøe Pihl. He was an office manager. They had two children together: Luise (born 1940) and Niels (born 1943). They later divorced in 1964. In May 1965, Eva married Alf Grostøl, a writer and publisher from Norway.

Eva finished high school at Marselisborg Gymnasium in Aarhus in 1931. She then went to Aarhus University in 1933. There, she studied Danish and English. She was also very active in the student union. After a year at Askov Højskole, she studied at Ruskin College in Oxford, England. In 1943, she passed an important English translation exam. This helped her a lot with her future work as a translator.

Career and Activism

In the 1940s, it was hard to earn a living just by writing books. So, Eva took a journalism course. She then got a job as a journalist at the Demokraten newspaper in Aarhus. She worked there until 1958.

At the same time, she started a very successful writing career. She published many novels, starting with Helene in 1944. Two of her most popular books were En lille tøg og hendes mor (which means "A Little Lass and Her Mother") from 1952, and Skandale i Troja (Scandal in Troy) from 1954. Skandale i Troja was so popular that it was translated into several languages, including English.

Eva Hemmer Hansen also gave lectures and taught evening classes. She was very active in politics as a social democrat. She was especially interested in issues affecting women. In 1948, she led the women's committee for the Aarhus City Council. In the late 1950s, she advised the Danish government at meetings in Geneva for the International Labour Organization.

She is especially remembered for leading the Danish Women's Society from 1968 to 1971. In 1971, for the group's 100th anniversary, she wrote a book called Blåstrømper, rødstrømper, uldstrømper. This book described the history of the organization.

Eva Hemmer Hansen passed away in Aarhus on March 26, 1983. She is buried in the city's Vestre Cemetery.
