Giuliana Luigia Evelina Mameli (born February 12, 1886 – died March 31, 1978) was an important Italian botanist and naturalist. A botanist studies plants, and a naturalist studies nature in general. She was also known as Eva Mameli Calvino.
Eva was born in Sassari, a city on the island of Sardinia, Italy. In 1906, she moved to Pavia with her brother, Efisio Mameli. He was a chemist and pharmacologist at the university there. In 1907, Eva graduated from the University of Pavia with a degree in Natural Sciences. This means she studied living things and nature. In 1915, she earned the "libera docenza," which allowed her to teach at universities.
While working as a junior lecturer at the University of Pavia, she married Mario Calvino. He was an agronomist, someone who studies how to grow crops and manage farms.
Life in Cuba and Family
In 1920, Mario Calvino was offered an exciting job in Cuba. He became the head of the Botany Department at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Santiago de Las Vegas. This station was a place where scientists studied plants to help farming. Eva joined him there.
The couple moved to Cuba, and in 1923, their first child, Italo Calvino, was born. Italo later became a very famous writer. Eva believed strongly in peace, civic duty (being a good citizen), and the power of science. Her son Italo described her as someone who lived by these values.
Eva Mameli lived a long life, passing away in San Remo, Italy, when she was 92 years old.
