Eva Maria Mandl (born May 29, 1902 – died September 10, 1924), known professionally as Eva May, was a talented Austrian actress. She was the daughter of famous film director Joe May and actress Mia May. Eva May became well-known for her roles in silent films during the early 1900s.

Eva May's Early Life and Family

Eva Maria Mandl was born in Vienna, Austria, on May 29, 1902. Her mother was Mia May, a well-known Austrian actress. Her father was Joe May, a famous Austrian-Jewish film director. Her parents had married just seven weeks before she was born. Growing up with such creative parents, it's no surprise Eva also became interested in movies.

Starting Her Acting Career

Eva May began her acting career at a young age. She took on the professional name Eva May. Her very first film was Die geheimnisvolle Villa (The Mysterious Villa) in 1914. This movie was directed by her own father, Joe May.

In 1918, Eva started working for a film company called Ring-Film GmbH. The company was managed by Manfred Liebenau, who directed movies using the name Erik Lund. Eva and Erik got married when she was only 16 years old. During this time, Eva starred in several films. These included Erträumtes (1918), Sadja (1918), and The Bride of the Incapacitated (1919). Eva and Erik even created their own series of films. Eva May wrote the scripts for these movies herself.

Working with Different Directors

In the 1920s, Eva May continued to work in films. She sometimes worked with her father, Joe May, again. They made movies like The Legend of Holy Simplicity (1920) and Junge Mama (1921). Eva was known for being a bit challenging to work with at times. She often had disagreements with her father.

She also worked with other talented directors. These included Karl Grune in The Count of Charolais (1922). She also worked with Max Mack in Die Fledermaus (1923). In that film, she acted alongside Lya de Putti. Eva also starred with Alfred Abel in Scheine des Todes (1923). This movie was directed by her second husband, Lothar Mendes.

Some of her most successful films were Paganini (1923), where she starred with Conrad Veidt. Another popular film was Old Heidelberg (1923), with Paul Hartmann. Her very last film was Der geheime Agent (The Secret Agent) in 1924.

Eva May was married three times. After her marriage to Erik Lund, she married Lothar Mendes. Later, she married Manfred Noa. However, all her marriages ended in divorce. Eva May passed away on September 10, 1924, when she was just 22 years old.
