Evangeline Barongo is a talented writer from Uganda. She writes wonderful books especially for children. She also helps many groups that encourage kids to read and write.
Evangeline is a founding member of the Uganda Children’s Writers and Illustrators Association (UCWIA). This group brings together people who write and draw for children's books. It also includes librarians, teachers, and booksellers. She is also part of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in Uganda, which started in 2004. Since 1997, she has been on the board of the National Book Trust of Uganda.
Early Life and Learning
Evangeline Barongo first trained as a nursery nurse. She worked for a year in England. During that time, she studied children's psychology.
Later, she earned a diploma in Library Science. She got this from Bayero University Kano in Nigeria. After her studies, she worked as a librarian at that university.
In 1986, she returned to Uganda. She started working with the Uganda Public Libraries Board. At the same time, she ran a special library service for children in Kampala. In 1991, Barongo received a scholarship. This allowed her to study for two months at the International Youth Library in Munich.
Writing and Helping Kids Read
Evangeline Barongo has worked on children's projects in many countries. These include Sweden, South Africa, and the United States. She writes her books in two languages. She uses English and Runyoro, which is her first language.
Her books are sold in Europe. She has also won several awards for her writing. One of these was the NABOTU author of the year award in 2008.
Evangeline is now retired from her government job. However, she still owns a bookshop in Hoima. She continues to write new stories for children. She also stays very involved in activities that help children love reading.
