Evans Tyree (born August 19, 1854 – died November 12, 1920) was an important leader. He was a doctor and a Bishop in the A.M.E. Church. This church is also known as the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He lived and worked in Nashville, Tennessee.

Early Life and Learning

Tyree was born into slavery in DeKalb County, Tennessee. This was in the year 1854. In 1865, slavery ended in the United States. This event is called emancipation. After emancipation, he and his mother lived and worked on a farm. This farm was also in DeKalb County.

He learned to read in 1866. Soon after, he joined the Methodist Church. He started preaching when he was just 14 years old. He joined the church conference at 18. By age 22, he became an elder in the church.

Schooling and Medical Training

Tyree went to Central Tennessee College. He studied there for six years. In 1883, he graduated at the top of his class. He then continued his studies for two more years. He attended Meharry Medical College.

He earned his medical degree (MD) in 1894. He received this degree in Louisville, Kentucky. This shows he was very dedicated to his education.

Leading the A.M.E. Church

Evans Tyree began preaching in 1868. He often had to work on a farm. This farm work helped him support his family. He did this while also preaching.

In 1900, he was chosen as a bishop. This happened in Columbus, Ohio. He was the most senior of five bishops chosen that year.

Church Districts and Global Travel

Bishop Tyree first led the Eighth Episcopal District. This area included Mississippi and Arkansas. Later, he moved to the Tenth District. This district was called the "Texas Conference." It covered many areas. These included Indian Mission, Oklahoma Territory, Central Texas, Texas, and West Texas.

In 1901, he traveled to London. He was a delegate to a big meeting. It was called the Ecumenical Conference of Methodism. This means it was a meeting for Methodist churches from around the world.

Important Church Book

In 1912, Bishop Tyree helped create an important book. It was the first edition of the Book of Discipline of the A.M.E. Church. This book contained the rules and beliefs of the church. What was special about this book? It was completely "edited, set, print and bound" by Black people. This was a big achievement for the time.
