A Great Poet from Puerto Rico
Ribera Chevremont is known as one of the most important poets from the Caribbean islands. Some critics in the mid-1900s, like Federico de Onís and Concha Meléndez, even thought he was one of the best poets writing in Spanish.
He traveled to Spain many times. There, he made friends with other writers. People admired his amazing talent for writing poetry. Many of his works were published in Spain, as well as in Puerto Rico.
His Poetic Style
Ribera Chevremont was skilled in many modern poetry styles. These included Hispanoamerican Modernism, European Ultraism, and Suprarealism. Modernism focused on new ways of writing. Ultraism was about using new images and metaphors. Suprarealism explored dreams and the subconscious mind.
He wrote in both free verse and traditional forms. Free verse means poetry without a regular rhyme or rhythm. He was especially good at writing sonnets. Sonnets are poems with 14 lines and a specific rhyme scheme. You can see his skill in books like Sonetos del Mar, del Amor, de la Soledad, de la Muerte, de Dios.
His Published Works
Ribera Chevremont's first book of poems was Desfile Romántico, published in 1914. In 1974, he published El Caos de los Sueños. This book contained deep, lyrical poems in free verse.
After he passed away, the University of Puerto Rico Press published a huge collection of his poems. This was in 1980 and came in two large books. Other poetry books were also published after his death. These include Jinetes de la inmortalidad and El Libro de las Apologías.
His very last book, Sonetos a Galicia, was published in 1994. This book was dedicated to the land where his father was from. His wife, María Luisa Méndez de Chevremont, and his daughter, Iris Ribera-Chevremont Méndez, helped publish it.
