Evelyn's Early Life
Evelyn Vanderhoop was born in 1953 in a place called Masset, British Columbia. Art runs in her family! Her mother, Delores Churchill, was a famous Haida weaver. Evelyn's grandmother, Selina Peratrovich, was also a skilled weaver.
Her Education
Evelyn went to Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. There, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This degree helped her learn many art skills.
Her Artistic Career
When Evelyn first started her art career, she mostly focused on painting. Later, she began to work more with textiles, which means creating art using fabrics and weaving.
Weaving and Cultural Knowledge
Evelyn's art is not just about making beautiful things. She also spends time researching and sharing important cultural knowledge about the Haida people. She is a specialist in weaving styles from the Northern Northwest Coast art region.
Famous Weaving Projects
In 2011, the Canadian Museum of History asked Evelyn to create a special robe. It was called Sqalra Qwii Ghaalgyaat, which means Ripples in the Sky Robe in English. This was a Raven's Tail style robe. For this big project, Evelyn worked together with her mother, Delores Churchill, and her two daughters.
Later, in 2017, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston also asked Evelyn to create a dance robe. This robe was made using the Raven's Tail technique.

You can find Evelyn Vanderhoop's artwork in several public collections. These include the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. Her art is also displayed at the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate, British Columbia.
