Everett, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Everett is a small place in Cass County, Missouri. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a group of homes and businesses that are not part of any official city or town. Instead, they are usually governed by the larger county they are in. This means they don't have their own mayor or city council. People living in places like Everett still get services, but these are often provided by the county government.

A Look Back at Everett's History

Everett has a history that goes back to the 1800s. It was officially planned out and named in the mid-1800s. Like many small communities, it once had its own post office, which was very important for communication back then.

How Everett Got Its Name

The community of Everett was named in honor of a famous person named Edward Everett. He was an important American politician and speaker. Edward Everett lived from 1794 to 1865 and was known for his speeches, including one at the same event where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address. Naming a place after a respected figure was a common way to honor them in those times.

The First Buildings and Mail

Everett was "platted" in 1867. To "plat" a town means to draw up a map that shows how the land is divided into streets, blocks, and lots. This was the first step in organizing the community and planning where homes and businesses would be built. Before it was platted, a post office was set up in Everett in 1857. This post office served the community for many years, helping people send and receive letters and packages. It stayed open until 1906, when it was eventually closed down.
