Everettsville is a small place in Albemarle County, Virginia. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

How Everettsville Got Its Name

Everettsville was named after a person named Dr. Charles Everett. He was a planter, which means he owned and managed a large farm.

Dr. Everett's Land

In 1821, Dr. Charles Everett bought a big piece of land. It was about 400 acres and was called "Pouncey's." This land was part of a larger area known as the Shadwell tract.

From Thomas Jefferson

Guess who sold him the land? None other than Thomas Jefferson, who was a very important person in American history! After buying it, Dr. Everett made his property much bigger. He ended up owning over 1,000 acres. Because he owned so much land there, the whole area started to be known as Everettsville.

A Stop on the Stagecoach Route

In the middle of the 1800s, Everettsville was an important stop. It was located along a stagecoach route.

Connecting Cities

Stagecoaches were like old-fashioned buses pulled by horses. They carried people and mail between different towns. The route that passed through Everettsville connected two major cities: Richmond and Staunton.

A Brief Stay for a Family

In early 1829, the wife and children of a man named Nicholas Trist stayed in Everettsville for a short time. They were waiting for news to join Trist in Washington, D.C.
