Ewen MacPherson of Cluny, also known as "Cluny Macpherson," was an important leader of the Clan MacPherson. He was born on 11 February 1706 and died on 30 June 1764. Cluny lived during a time of big changes in Scotland, especially during the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

Cluny Macpherson: A Highland Chief

Cluny Macpherson was the chief of the Clan MacPherson. This meant he was the main leader and representative of his family and their people. Being a clan chief was a very important role in Scotland during the 1700s. Chiefs were responsible for their clan's land and for looking after their people.

Supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie

In 1745, a major event called the Jacobite Rising began in Scotland. This was a rebellion led by Charles Edward Stuart, often called "Bonnie Prince Charlie." He wanted to take back the throne of Great Britain for his family. Many Scottish clans, including the MacPhersons, decided to support him.

Cluny Macpherson chose to join Bonnie Prince Charlie's cause. He led his clan's fighters to support the Prince. This was a risky decision, as going against the government could lead to serious trouble.

Hiding After the Battle

The Jacobite Rising ended with a big battle called the Battle of Culloden. The Jacobite army was defeated. After this loss, many of Bonnie Prince Charlie's supporters, including Cluny Macpherson, had to go into hiding. The government was looking for them.

Cluny spent many years hiding in the Scottish Highlands. He lived in secret places, sometimes in caves or small huts, to avoid being captured. This was a very difficult time for him. He was known for his cleverness in staying hidden.

Escape to France

Eventually, after nine years in hiding, Cluny Macpherson managed to escape from Scotland. He sailed to France in 1755. He lived there for the rest of his life. He never returned to Scotland.

A Famous Relative

Cluny Macpherson had a famous nephew named James Macpherson. James became a well-known poet. He wrote or translated a series of poems called the Ossian poems. These poems were about ancient Scottish heroes and their adventures.
