Exeter Quay facts for kids
Exeter Quay, also called Exeter Quayside, is a cool spot in the city of Exeter. It's right next to the River Exe and the Exeter Ship Canal. Long, long ago, even before recorded history, people used this area as a port. They would unload goods from ships onto a natural sandstone ledge.
But then, something happened! By 1381, a structure called the Countess Weir was built. This weir blocked the river, making it hard for ships to reach Exeter. So, in 1566, a special canal was finished. This canal helped ships get around the weir and reach the city again.
As more ships started using the quay, it needed to grow. So, it was made bigger in the late 1600s. Even more expansion happened in 1830 when a new area for ships, called a canal basin, was dug. However, things changed again in 1840. This is when railways came to Exeter. Ships were no longer the main way to move goods. Because of this, shipping at the quay slowly stopped. Today, Exeter Quay is mostly used for fun activities and relaxing.
A special boat called the Butts Ferry crosses the River Exe at Exeter Quayside. It's a manually operated cable ferry, meaning someone has to pull it across!
