Occurrence data from AVH

Exocarpos aphyllus, often called the leafless ballart, is a special plant. It belongs to the sandalwood plant family, known as Santalaceae. This plant is endemic to Australia, which means it grows naturally only in Australia and nowhere else in the world.

The Noongar people, who are Indigenous Australians from the southwest of Western Australia, have several names for this plant. They call it chuk, chukk, dtulya, and merrin.

Traditional Uses of Leafless Ballart

For a long time, the Noongar people have used the leafless ballart in traditional ways. They would boil the stems of the plant in water. This created a special liquid that they used for different purposes.

  • For Colds: They drank this liquid to help treat colds.
  • For Sores: They also put the liquid on their skin to help with sores.
  • For Other Illnesses: Sometimes, they made a paste from the plant. This paste was put on the chest to help with certain illnesses.
