Exocarpos is a group of flowering plants that are usually shrubs or small trees. They belong to the Santalaceae family, which is also known as the sandalwood family. You can find these plants growing in places like Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands.
These plants are quite unique because they are semi-parasitic. This means they get some of their food and water from the roots of other trees, which are called "host trees." They share this special way of living with many other plants in the sandalwood family.
In Australia, Exocarpos plants are often called ballarts. Some types are also known as "cherries" because of their fruit. If you want to identify specific types of Exocarpos in New South Wales or Victoria, there are special guides available.
