Exocarpos syrticola, often called coastal ballart or coast ballart, is a unique plant. It belongs to the sandalwood plant family, known as Santalaceae. This special plant is found only in Australia.
You can find coastal ballart growing along the coasts of Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. It loves to live right by the ocean.
This plant was first studied in 1856. A famous botanist named Ferdinand von Mueller described it then. He first called it Exocarpos strictus var. syrticola. Later, in 1959, another scientist, Hans Ulrich Stauffer, gave it its own species name, Exocarpos syrticola.
