Expensive Hobby: A Champion Horse
Who Was Expensive Hobby?
Expensive Hobby was a buckskin colored gelding. This means he was a male horse that had been gelded, and his coat was a beautiful golden-yellow or tan color with black points (mane, tail, and lower legs). He was born in 1971. His father was a horse named Hobby Horse, and his mother was Jan's Helen.
What Made Him Special?
Expensive Hobby was known for his incredible talent in horse shows. He competed in a sport called reining 120 times. Can you believe he won 110 of those times? That's almost every single time he competed!
He was also a champion in two other sports:
- Working Cowhorse: In this sport, a horse and rider work together to control a cow. They show how well they can handle the cow, moving it around an arena.
- Cutting: This sport involves a horse and rider separating one cow from a herd. The horse must show great skill and instinct to keep the cow away from the group.
His Big Wins
In 1979, Expensive Hobby achieved a huge success. He won the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Show Champion title in both working cowhorse and reining. Winning two world championships in the same year is a very rare and impressive feat for any horse! He also earned the AQHA Superior Cutting Horse award, showing his skill in that sport too.
Retirement and Legacy
Expensive Hobby officially retired from showing in 1983. He did come out of retirement for a short time, but then he retired for good. He lived a long life, passing away in 2003 at the age of 32.
His amazing achievements were not forgotten. In 2007, Expensive Hobby was honored by being inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. This special place recognizes the most important horses and people in the history of the American Quarter Horse breed. It means he will always be remembered as one of the best.
