Sercan İpekçioğlu (born 1 July 1991), known as Ezhel, is a Turkish rapper and singer. His music mixes different styles like trap, hip hop, and reggae. His song "AYA" has been played over 80 million times on Spotify. People sometimes call him the "Freestyle King."
Life and Music Career
Ezhel grew up in a family that loved music. His mother was a dancer, and his uncle was a musician. Ezhel got a scholarship to a special school called TED. He started listening to famous American rappers like Eminem and Tupac Shakur. Ezhel also knows some Kurmanji, a Kurdish language. He sometimes uses Kurdish words and ideas in his songs.
When Ezhel was 12, he became very interested in rap music. By age 15, he left high school to focus on his music dream. Later, he discovered Bob Marley and his music. This led Ezhel to learn about Rastafarianism, a way of life that influenced him a lot. He says he mixed the rebellious side of rap with the ideas of Rastafarianism.
At 18, Ezhel started performing with a reggae band called Afra Tafra. After that band ended, he created his own reggae band, Kökler Filizleniyor, with friends from Ankara. He used the stage name Ais Ezhel until 2017. The name "Ais" comes from the English word "ice."
Ezhel can play the bağlama and guitar. He also sings reggae with his band Kökler Filizleniyor. His first album, Müptezhel, came out in 2017. In May 2019, The New York Times newspaper said Ezhel was one of the European pop artists everyone should know. Since 2019, Ezhel has been living in Berlin, Germany. He has said he believes he might be arrested if he returns to Turkey.
Ezhel has often talked about his love for his country and its diverse cultures. He once said that he speaks Kurdish and supports a team called Amedspor. He believes in loving his country in a deep way. He also shared that he wants all cultures, like Greeks, Armenians, and Kurds, to stay in Turkey. He feels it would be sad if any of them left.
Cultural and Personal Beliefs
Ezhel often talks about his background and cultural ties. He has said, "I speak Kurdish, yes, and I share posts about Amedspor. I love this country in a way you’ve never tried to love it." His support for the Kurdish people and their culture has led to many discussions.
In another interview, Ezhel shared his wish for different groups to live together in Turkey. He said, "Rum (Greeks) have already left, Armenians have already left, and if the Kurds leave, my heart will no longer bear it." These words show his strong belief in Turkey's many cultures living side-by-side.
About his religion, Ezhel said in 2018 that he was not a Christian. However, in later years, he shared that he had become a Christian. This decision was a big topic among his fans.
Ezhel's music, his views on culture, and his personal journey continue to inspire many. He is an important artist in both Turkish and global music.
