Félix Castello's Early Life
Félix Castello was born and died in Madrid, Spain. Art was in his family! His father, Fabrizio Castello, was also a painter. Fabrizio worked for King Philip II at famous palaces like El Escorial and the Palacio de Pardo.
Félix's grandfather was the painter Giovanni Battista Castello, also known as Il Bergamasco. Félix learned his painting skills from talented teachers. He trained with Vincenzo Carducci and Bartolomeo Carducci. In December 1615, he married Catherine de Argüello. Just two years later, he became a "Painter to the King." This important job became open after his father passed away.
Félix Castello's Painting Career
Castello's painting style was very similar to his teachers, the Carduccis. This sometimes made it hard to tell their paintings apart! He likely worked in Carducci's studio for many years.
In 1627, he was again called to be a "Painter to the King." This time, the position was open after another artist, Bartolomé González y Serrano, died.
Castello painted for several important places. He created art for the chapel of Santo Cristo de la Paciencia. This chapel was in the Convent of the Capuchins. He also painted for the cloister of the Convent of Santa Barbara.
He helped create portraits of kings for the Royal Palace of Madrid. He also worked on a painting called Lactation of the Virgin to St. Bernard. This painting is in the church of San Juan in Telde, Gran Canaria. Another famous work attributed to him is Saint Francis of Assisi, which is now in the Prado Museum.

In November 1647, Félix Castello's first wife passed away. He remarried soon after, in February 1648, to Barbara Huete. Félix Castello died in Madrid on September 12, 1651.
