Félix Ormazabal Askasibar (born May 5, 1940 – died January 15, 2022) was an important Spanish politician. He was part of the Basque Nationalist Party. He served as the Deputy General of Álava from 1995 to 1999. This is a bit like being the leader of a local government. He was also a member of the Basque Parliament, which is like a regional assembly, in 1980 and again from 1984 to 1995. He passed away in Vitoria-Gasteiz when he was 81 years old.

Félix Ormazabal's Life and Career

Early Life and Start in Politics

Félix Ormazabal was born in Araia, Álava in 1940. He studied both law and theology. As a priest in Zaramaga [es], he supported workers during a strike in 1972. This strike happened at the Michelin factory in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Because of his involvement, he was held for about a month. He decided to enter politics after meeting José Ángel Cuerda. Mr. Cuerda was his lawyer during that time.

Becoming a Political Leader

Félix Ormazabal was first elected to a public office in 1979. He became a member of the local council in Asparrena. In the same year, he became the head of the Department of Agriculture. This was part of the Basque General Council [es]. He held this important position until 1988. During this time, he worked under leaders like Carlos Garaikoetxea and José Antonio Ardanza.

He was also part of the first government of the Foral Deputation of Álava [es]. This was after the local government was brought back. He worked with the Deputy General Emilio Guevara. Ormazabal was elected to the Basque Parliament five times in a row. His first election to the Parliament was in 1980.

Leading Álava

In 1995, he was elected to the General Assembly of Álava. Soon after, he became the Deputy General of Álava. He led a government that was a team-up of different parties. These parties were Eusko Alkartasuna and the Socialist Party. This team worked together until 1997.

The Socialist Party left the team because of a disagreement. José Ángel Cuerda had removed members of their party from the city council in Vitoria-Gasteiz. In the 1999 election, Ormazabal was the main candidate for his party. His party came in second place. The People's Party won more votes.

In the final vote to choose the new Deputy General, the Socialist Party supported Ramón Rabanera [es]. He was the candidate from the People's Party. This meant that Félix Ormazabal's time as Deputy General came to an end.

Retirement and Later Life

Félix Ormazabal decided to retire from politics in 2005. He passed away in January 2022. He had a sudden heart attack at his home in Araia, Álava.
