The team often moved between Romania's second and first football leagues. They played in the top league, Liga I, for 28 seasons. This happened during different times, like 1960–61, 1962–1967, and 2004–2010.
Politehnica Iași: Recent Seasons (2004-2010)
2004–05 Season: A Strong Comeback
Politehnica Iași had a tough start in the 2004–05 season. They only got two points in their first eight games. The manager, Vasile Simionaș, was replaced by Ionuț Popa.
After this change, Politehnica won their next game. They beat Steaua București 1–0, with Adrian Cristea scoring the goal. The team slowly moved up from the bottom of the league. They finished the season in 9th place with 38 points.
In the Romanian Cup, they lost in the first round. UTA Arad beat them 1–0.
2005–06 Season: Avoiding Relegation
The 2005–06 season was good for Politehnica Iași. Their main goal was to stay in the league. They lost closely to the future champions Steaua. They also lost to Rapid București and Dinamo București.
However, they managed a draw against Dinamo București. Daniel Rednic scored a goal in the second half. Politehnica Iași ended up in 10th place with 39 points.
In the Romanian Cup, they reached the quarter-finals. They beat Unirea Dej and FC Vaslui. They were then knocked out by Rapid București.
The club faced money problems during this season. It was hard to buy new players. They also had trouble getting their license to play in the top league. But the mayor of Iași, Gheorghe Nichita, helped them get the license.
2006–07 Season: Facing Challenges
Politehnica Iași started the 2006–07 season with money problems again. Only four new players joined the team. Salaries were often paid late. There was also a public disagreement between the mayor and the Iași prefect.
Despite these issues, Politehnica was among the top six teams after 12 games. They went eight games without losing. This included draws with Steaua and Rapid. Later, they had a tough period, getting only one point in seven games. But they bounced back with a 4–0 win against Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț. Politehnica finished 13th with 40 points.
For the second year in a row, they reached the quarter-finals of the Romanian Cup. They beat Universitatea Cluj and Farul Constanța. But they lost to Poli Timișoara 2–1.
2009–10 Season: Relegation
At the end of the 2009–10 season, Politehnica Iași was moved down from the Liga I (the top league).
The End of the Club: Dissolution in 2010
After being moved down from the top league in 2010, the club went bankrupt. This happened because of many debts built up over the years.
However, the football spirit in Iași continued. A new club, Politehnica Iași (2010), was formed. This new club sees itself as carrying on the history of the original team. In 2018, they were allowed to use the old club's logo and name.
