Factory Island 1 is a special place called an reserve in northern Ontario, Canada. It's home to the Cree people, specifically the Moose Cree First Nation. This reserve is located on Moose Factory Island and is one of two reserves for the Moose Cree community.

About Factory Island 1

Factory Island 1 covers the northern two-thirds of Moose Factory Island. This area is mostly where people live. You'll find important places here like a Northern Store (a general store), the Cree Interpretative Centre (where you can learn about Cree culture), and the Treeline Diner. Some key government services, like the hospital, are located in the southern part of the island, which is not part of the reserve.

About half of the reserve, especially the northern end, is covered with trees.

Getting Around

If you're traveling on Factory Island 1, you'll use gravel roads. There aren't any bridges connecting the island to the mainland. However, during the winter, a special ice road is built. This ice road allows vehicles to cross the frozen river.

Climate and Weather

Factory Island 1 and the nearby Moosonee area have a very cold climate. It's known as a humid continental climate (which is called Dfb in the Köppen system). This means it has warm summers but very cold winters with lots of snow. The weather information below comes from Moosonee, which is about 3 kilometers (2 miles) to the west.
