Fairfax Square facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fairfax Square is a special place in Tysons Corner, Virginia. It's a "mixed-use development," which means it has different kinds of spaces all in one spot. You'll find fancy offices and high-end shops here. It's located right across the street from the big Tysons Corner Center mall.

What is Fairfax Square?

Fairfax Square has three tall buildings. These buildings hold about 400,000 square feet of "Class A office space." This is a fancy way to say really nice, top-quality offices! Many financial companies, like American Express and Merrill Lynch, have offices here. The buildings were designed by a famous company called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. They are covered in beautiful Brazilian granite. Inside, the main entrance areas, called lobbies, are super elegant. They are decorated with Italian marble and nice wood panels. Work on Fairfax Square began in 1988.

Famous Stores You'll Find

When Fairfax Square first opened in 1990, it had a huge Tiffany & Co. store. It was the biggest Tiffany store outside of New York at the time! It had 14,500 square feet of space for shopping.

Another famous store here is Hermès. This is their only store in the whole Washington metropolitan area. Hermès even made their store bigger in 2006 because so many people loved shopping there! The Tiffany store at Fairfax Square is still twice as big as another Tiffany store on Wisconsin Avenue.

Not to Be Confused!

There is another place also called Fairfax Square. But don't get them mixed up! The other one is an older, smaller development. It's located in the City of Fairfax, not Tysons Corner. That one has just a small amount of offices and shops.
