History of Fairview
Early Days and Name Changes
Fairview was likely started around 1793 by Samuel Davis. He was a soldier who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Samuel Davis opened the first post office in the area in 1802. He called the place "Davisburg." His son, Jefferson Davis, was born here on June 3, 1808. Jefferson Davis later became an important leader during the American Civil War.
The Davis family moved away from Fairview in 1810. Later, the community was known as "Georgetown." This name came from George Nichols, who ran a local tavern. The town officially became "Fairview" in 1846.
Bethel Baptist Church
In the 1880s, some people from Fairview bought the old Davis family land. They wanted it to be the new home for Bethel Baptist Church. They worked with Jefferson Davis, who was still alive. He officially gave the land to the church in 1886.
The old Davis family home was taken down. A new church building was built in its place. This church burned down in 1900. The church building you see there today was built the next year, in 1901.
Jefferson Davis State Historic Site
A special monument and park, called the Jefferson Davis State Historic Site, was started in 1917. This site honors Jefferson Davis. Construction of the monument was finished in 1924. It is a tall, impressive structure that visitors can see today.
