Faisal Naseem was born on July 20, 1973. He is a politician from the Maldives. He served as the Vice President of the Maldives from 2018 to 2023.
He became Vice President after being chosen as the running mate for Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. They won the presidential election in 2018. Before becoming Vice President, Faisal Naseem worked for many years in social services, especially in the tourism industry.
While he was Vice President, Faisal Naseem took on the President's duties for a short time on February 25, 2022. This happened when the President had a medical procedure. He is known for being the longest-serving Vice President in Maldivian history, completing a full five-year term.
Early Life and Education
Faisal Naseem was born in the Funaadu area of Fuvahmulah on July 20, 1973. When he was 12 years old, in 1986, he started working in the social sector.
He later went to college in the United Kingdom. He earned a bachelor's degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the University of Birmingham. He also received a master's degree in Business Administration from Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Career Highlights
Before studying in England, Faisal Naseem worked in the hotel industry. He held various jobs, from assistant manager to general manager. He wanted to learn as much as possible about this field, where he spent most of his career.
His hard work was recognized with awards. In 1999, he received the National Youth Award for his social services. In 2015, he got a "Special Recognition" award. He was also named a Disability Ambassador in 2014.
Faisal Naseem is also talented in building and design. He has worked on creating different guesthouses, resorts, and homes. Recently, he worked on the Millennium guest house in Fuvahmulah.
Journey into Politics
Faisal Naseem first entered politics in 2004. He was one of the people chosen to represent the Fuvahmulah Constituency. His job was to help write a new constitution for the country between 2004 and 2008.
After the constitution was finished, he took a break from politics for five years. He returned to the parliament in 2014. This time, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Kaashidhoo.
On July 13, 2018, he was chosen to run alongside Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the Vice Presidential candidate. They ran in the 2018 presidential election and won. Faisal Naseem completed a full five-year term as Vice President. This made him the longest-serving Vice President since the Maldives started having multi-party elections in 2008.
