Faisal Naseem, born on July 20, 1973, is a politician from the Maldives. He served as the Vice President of the Maldives from 2018 to 2023. He became Vice President after being chosen by Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to run with him in the 2018 presidential election. Before becoming Vice President, Mr. Naseem worked for many years helping people, especially in the tourism industry.
While he was Vice President, he even took on the President's duties for a short time on February 25, 2022. This happened when the President had a medical procedure. He is known as the longest-serving Vice President in the history of the Maldives.
Early Life and Education
Faisal Naseem was born in the Funaadu district of Fuvahmulah on July 20, 1973. In 1986, when he was 12 years old, Naseem started working in the social sector.
He went to college in the United Kingdom. He earned a bachelor's degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the University of Birmingham. Later, he received a master's degree in Business Administration from Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Career Highlights
Before studying in England, Naseem worked in the hotel and tourism industry. He held many different jobs, from assistant manager to general manager. He wanted to learn as much as possible about this field, where he would spend most of his career.
People recognized his hard work and dedication. In 1999, he received the National Youth Award for his social services. He also got a "Special Recognition" award in 2015. In 2014, he was named a Disability Ambassador, helping people with disabilities.
Faisal Naseem is also talented in other areas. He is a skilled craftsman, architect, and interior designer. He has helped build many guesthouses, resorts, and homes. Recently, he worked on the Millennium guest house in Fuvahmulah.
Political Journey
Naseem started his political career in 2004. He was one of the people chosen to represent the Fuvahmulah Constituency. His job was to help write a new constitution for the Maldives from 2004 to 2008.
After the new constitution was finished, he took a break from politics for five years. He returned to the parliament in 2014. This time, he served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kaashidhoo. On July 13, 2018, Naseem was chosen to be Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's running mate for the 2018 presidential election. This meant he would become Vice President if Solih won.
Naseem is remembered for being the longest-serving Vice President of the Maldives. He completed a full five-year term. This happened after the country made changes to become more democratic in 2008, allowing for elections with many political parties.
