Falcon Island is situated near other islands in the Palm Islands group. Its closest neighbor is Esk Island. Together, these islands form a unique part of Australia's natural landscape.
Its Special Name
The original name for Falcon Island in the Nyawaygi language is Carbooroo. This name comes from the traditional owners of the land. It connects the island to its long history and the culture of the Aboriginal people.
A Look Back in Time
In 1941, Falcon Island was officially marked as an Aboriginal reserve. This meant it was set aside for Aboriginal people. The idea was to make the Palm Island Aboriginal Settlement bigger. However, the island was never actually used for this purpose. Today, Falcon Island, along with nine other islands in the Palm Islands group, is managed by the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island. This is the local government for the area.
