Fallston is a small town, called a borough, in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, USA. It's located right by the Beaver River. In 2020, about 259 people lived there. Fallston is also part of the bigger Pittsburgh area.

History of Fallston

Fallston got its name from a waterfall in the Beaver River. It sits on the west side of the river. Right across the river is the town of New Brighton, Pennsylvania.

Early Settlement and Growth

The narrow space between the hills and the Beaver River was perfect for building a dam. This dam created water power, which helped Fallston become an important place for making things. In 1837, a business directory said that Fallston would grow a lot. This was because it had many natural resources and great water power.

The town of Fallston became an official borough in 1829. This was made possible by a special law. A post office also opened in Fallston on June 25, 1829.

Newspapers in Fallston

On August 5, 1835, a newspaper called the Fallston and Brighton Gazette started in Fallston. It was one of the first newspapers in Beaver County. However, it didn't last long and stopped printing in November 1836.

Another newspaper, the Beaver Falls Union and Beaver County Advocate, took its place in January 1838. When it stopped in 1839, the Western Argus tried to take over its readers. The Western Argus had started in 1818 and continued for over 86 years.

Kennedy Brothers' Business

In 1836, two brothers, Matthew T. Kennedy and Samuel Kennedy, started a business. They built cabinets and did wheelwright work using water power. Their father was an Irish-born wheel maker.

Later, their business changed to making nail kegs, and then lead kegs. It was very successful. In 1876, the Kennedy brothers opened a second factory in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. Their family continued to run the business until the 1930s.

The Beaver River Bridge

On October 1, 1836, a contract was given to build a covered wooden bridge over the Beaver River. This bridge was built in Fallston. It opened in 1837 and was used a lot by people.

Once the bridge opened, most of the factories were on the Fallston side. But many factory owners lived across the river in New Brighton. The covered bridge stayed until February 6, 1884. Big floods on the Ohio and Beaver rivers damaged many areas and washed the bridge away. A strong iron bridge replaced the old covered bridge. This iron bridge was used until February 2015.
