Meet Fancy Nancy!

Fancy Nancy is a young girl who loves everything fancy and glamorous. She has a big, colorful personality! Nancy always dresses in amazing outfits. She wears boas, tutus, sparkly ruby slippers, fairy wings, and fuzzy slippers.

Nancy also loves to use big, fancy words. She might say "iridescent" (which means shiny and colorful), "ecstatic" (meaning super happy), or "extraordinary" (meaning amazing). She even likes to use French words! Nancy has decorated her bedroom to be super fancy. She uses everyday items like feather boas, Christmas lights, paper flowers, and hats. Her favorite doll is named Marabelle Lavinia Chandelier.

Nancy captures hearts by nearly getting caught up in the glitter, but, in the end, always discovering what's truly important.

Nancy thinks her family is a bit plain and dresses too simply. So, she decides to teach them how to be fancy! Her family agrees, and Nancy helps them dress up. They put on bows, ornaments, top hats, and colorful scarves. Nancy is thrilled! She exclaims, "Ooo-la-la! My family is posh! That's a fancy word for fancy."

About the Author: Jane O'Connor

Jane O'Connor is a very important person at Penguin Books for Young Readers. She is a vice-president and editor-at-large. Jane has written more than thirty books for children. She also wrote a novel for adults called Dangerous Admissions: Secrets of a Closet Sleuth.

Jane got the idea for Fancy Nancy one summer evening. She remembers, "It was after dinner one evening that the title just came to me." She quickly wrote the first and last parts of the story. The middle part took a bit longer to write. Jane believes that a lot of the book's success comes from Robin Preiss Glasser's amazing artwork. Jane wrote the book in 2002, but it wasn't published until 2005. This was because her editor, Margaret Anastas, really wanted Robin Glasser to illustrate it. Robin was busy with other projects at the time.
