Ruby slippers facts for kids
The Ruby slippers are famous red shoes from the movie The Wizard of Oz. The main character, Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, wears them. These magical shoes are a very important part of the story. Many pairs of these slippers were made for the movie. Today, one pair is on display at the Smithsonian Institution in the United States. Other pairs are owned by people who collect movie items.

How Dorothy Found the Ruby Slippers
Dorothy gets the ruby slippers in a surprising way. Her house accidentally lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, which causes the witch to disappear. The slippers then appear on Dorothy's feet!
The Wicked Witch's Desire
The Wicked Witch of the East had a sister, the Wicked Witch of the West. This new witch really wants the ruby slippers. She believes they will make her the most powerful witch in all of Oz. She tries many times to take them from Dorothy as Dorothy travels along the yellow brick road.
The Slippers' Amazing Power
Dorothy knows the slippers are special, but she does not know their true power. At the end of the movie, she learns how to use them. To go home, she must click her heels together three times. While doing this, she repeats the famous words: "There's no place like home."
