Farme Castle: What It Looked Like
Farme Castle wasn't just one building. It had a main tower, called a keep, which was like the strongest part of the castle. This keep formed one corner of a large courtyard.
Next to the keep, there was a big house built to look like a castle, with battlements on top. High walls and other smaller buildings completed the courtyard, making it a safe space.
To get into the courtyard, you would pass through a fancy arched gateway right next to the main tower. The old keep itself was three stories tall, plus a small attic room at the very top. It had a strong, protective wall at the top, with special openings that were used for defense and to let water drain away.
A Peek into the Past
In 1917, something exciting was discovered inside the castle. Workers removed a newer ceiling and found a much older wooden ceiling hidden underneath!
This ancient ceiling had writing on it. The writing mentioned the Stewart family, who were very important in Scottish history. It also had a date: 1325.
Later, in the 2010s, some of this old writing was carved onto stone. You can now see it as a public art display at Cuningar Loop. This is a park not far from where the castle used to be.
Who Owned Farme Castle?
Farme Castle was a simple keep, likely built in the 1400s. It might even have been built on top of an even older structure.
The land where Farme Castle stood was first given by Robert the Bruce to Walter The Steward. Robert the Bruce was a famous Scottish king.
Over time, the estate changed hands. It later belonged to the Douglas family. From 1482 to 1599, the Crawford family owned the castle. Because of them, it became known as Crawford's Farme.
Where Did Farme Castle Go?
Sadly, Farme Castle was taken down in the 1960s. By that time, it was being used to store old mining equipment.
Today, you won't find the castle there. An industrial area, which is a place with many businesses and factories, now stands on the same spot. It is called Farme Industrial Estate, keeping the castle's name alive.
