The Farmers National Bank building is a historic former bank located in Plain City, Ohio. This interesting building sits at the corner of State Route 161 and Chillicothe Street. It was built in 1902 and is recognized as an important historical site. In 1995, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which is a list of places in the United States that are worth preserving.

The Historic Farmers National Bank Building

The Farmers National Bank of Plain City was officially started on August 6, 1900. It began with a starting fund of $25,000. Just two years later, in 1902, the bank built its own brick building. This building cost about $15,289.27 to construct.

Early Days of the Bank

The first president of the bank was William Atkinson. His oil portrait still hangs in the bank's lobby today. Over the years, other leaders took charge. C. F. Dutton became president in 1907, and Cephas Atkinson followed in 1914. By 1915, the bank had grown quite a bit. It held over $263,000 in deposits from its customers. It also had over $40,000 in extra funds and nearly $267,000 in loans. In 1934, the bank received FDIC insurance. This means that customer deposits were protected by the government.

Changes Over the Years

In 1993, the Farmers National Bank was bought by Park National Bank. Its name then changed to Citizens National Bank. This was a big change for the bank. It was also when the bank started using computers for the first time.

In 1995, the building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognized its importance to history. In 2003, the building was part of Union County's 'Bicentennial Homes and Buildings' tour.

A special person named Mary Mitchell retired in 2004. She had worked at the bank for an amazing 60 years! She started as a teller in 1944. To honor her long career, Mary Mitchell's portrait was hung in the lobby. It was placed across from William Atkinson's portrait.

On July 20, 2009, the bank's name changed again. It became Security National Bank. However, on September 30, 2020, Park National Bank closed this branch. As of early 2021, the building is no longer used as a bank.

A Bank That Was Never Robbed

The Farmers National Bank is well-known in its area for a special reason. It was never successfully robbed! There was one attempt in 1934, but it failed. This was partly because of the bank's strong security. The lobby was separated from the tellers by a steel cage. There was also one-inch thick bulletproof glass. These features helped keep the bank safe for many years.
