This whole area was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 29, 1985. That means it's an important place in American history.

A Look at the Farrar-Mansur House

The Farrar-Mansur House is a historic building. It shows us what homes looked like a long time ago. It is a great example of Federal architecture. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution.

Who Built This Historic Home?

The house was first built by Captain Oliver Farrar. He finished building it in 1797. Captain Farrar used the house as his family's home. Later, he added a large section to the house. This new part was used as a tavern. A tavern was a place where people could eat, drink, and stay overnight.

From Family Home to Museum

The Farrar family lived in the house for many years. They stayed there until 1857. Then, they sold the house to the Mansur family. The Mansurs lived in the house for three generations. They owned it until 1932.

Frank Mansur was the last Mansur to live there. He gave the house to the Community Club. He wanted them to fix it up. His wish was for the house to become a museum.

Bringing the House Back to Life

In the 1930s, the community worked together. They helped restore the house. This means they made it look like it did a long time ago. They put on new wooden siding called clapboarding. They also added new outside decorations.

Inside, artists painted murals in the parlor. A parlor was a formal living room. In the tavern room, they uncovered the old wooden beams. They also filled the house with furniture and items from the 1700s and early 1800s.

What You Can See at the Museum Today

Today, the Farrar-Mansur House is a museum. The Weston Historical Society takes care of it. When you visit, you can see many interesting things.

The museum has old furniture from New England. You can also see metal items made in Vermont in the early 1800s. There are old toys, musical instruments, and dishes. You might also see old clothes, quilts, and stitched pictures called samplers. There are even portraits from the 1800s. It's like stepping back in time!
