Edwin A. Smith, better known by his stage name Fast Eddie, is an American record producer and musician from Chicago, Illinois. He is famous for his work in house music and for helping create a new style called hip house.

Music Career

Early Days in Chicago

Fast Eddie started his career as a DJ in the early days of Chicago's house music scene. He played music on popular radio stations like WGCI-FM and WBMX. Around 1986, he worked with another musician, Kenny "Jammin'" Jason, to produce one of his first songs, "Can You Dance".

In 1987, Eddie released more house music tracks. One of them was called "The Whop," which was based on a popular dance move at the time. Soon after, he decided to leave his radio DJ jobs to focus all his energy on making music.

Creating Hip House

In 1988, Fast Eddie released "Acid Thunder," which became a big hit. But it was his track "Hip House" that truly made him famous as a producer. This song mixed the beats of house music with the rapping style of hip hop, creating a fun new genre called hip house. Fast Eddie helped make this style of music popular around the world.

He had several hit songs on the US Billboard dance music charts in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His song "Git On Up," featuring the rapper Sundance, reached number one on the dance chart in 1989.

Later Work

In the 1990s, Eddie continued to produce music and explore new sounds. In 1990, he tried a different style of rap music and released the song "Make Some Noise."

In 1995, he worked with other DJs on "ghetto house" tracks, a faster and more intense style of house music. He teamed up with DJ Sneak for the song "... Call" and with DJ Funk for the song "Pump It." He has continued to release music and work with other artists into the 2010s.
