Fathia Absie is a talented Somali-American writer, producer, actor, and filmmaker. She creates both documentaries, which tell true stories, and fictional movies. Fathia also wrote a graphic novel called The Imperceptible Peace Maker. She is a co-founder of Eat With Muslims, a project that helps people from different backgrounds meet and share stories over dinner. This project aims to build friendships and understanding between neighbors and communities.

Fathia Absie's Career Journey
Fathia Absie moved to Minnesota around 2010. Before becoming a filmmaker, she worked as a social worker. She has worked for several organizations, including the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services in Columbus, Ohio. She also worked at the University of Washington in Seattle and for Voice of America in Washington D.C.. In 2013, Fathia joined ECHO, a group in Minnesota that helps immigrant communities.
Early Films and Books
In 2011, Fathia Absie released her first documentary film, Broken Dreams. This film looked at the concerns in the Somali community in Minnesota. It explored why some young Somali people were leaving their homes. This situation brought a lot of attention from the U.S. government to the Somali community.
In 2014, Fathia Absie published her graphic novel, The Imperceptible Peace Maker. A graphic novel is like a comic book but tells a longer story. This book is about a superhero who is also a tech billionaire. He creates a special suit that makes him invisible. He uses this power to fight unfairness and help people around the world.
Fathia also worked with Twin Cities PBS, a public television station. There, she hosted many programs and a documentary called Giving Thanks!.
Later Film Projects
In 2015, Fathia Absie released her second film, The Lobby. This was a fictional story that she wrote, directed, and starred in herself. The movie first showed at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Film Festival in April 2015. It was a story about a relationship between a white man and a Somali-American woman.
In 2016, Fathia Absie acted in the drama film A Stray. This movie was directed by Musa Syeed. It was about a young Muslim refugee in Minneapolis who meets a stray dog. Fathia played the mother of the main character, Barkhad Abdirahman.
In November 2017, Fathia Absie worked again with Barkhad Abdirahman. This time, she played his and Faysal Ahmed’s mother in a film called First Person Plural. This movie was a modern version of Romeo and Juliet.
Fathia Absie has also started working on a new story called "Grapes Of Heaven." This story is about a Somali-American woman who is heartbroken. She visits a small coastal town in Somaliland called Berbera. A famous Somali poet named Bodheri died there from a broken heart in the 1930s.
