Federico Marcos del Rosario Errázuriz Zañartu (April 25, 1825 – July 20, 1877) was an important Chilean politician. He served as the president of Chile from 1871 to 1876.

About Federico Errázuriz Zañartu
Federico Errázuriz Zañartu was born in Santiago in 1825. His family had roots from the Basque region. He studied law at the University of Chile.
Early Political Career
He became a member of parliament when he was still young. He often spoke in important debates. In 1860, he became the leader of the Santiago region. He brought in many new and good changes there.
In 1862, during the time President Pérez was in charge, Federico became the minister of justice and public education. Later, in 1865, he was made the minister of war and the navy. This was during the Chincha Islands War with Spain.
President of Chile (1871-1876)
In 1871, Federico Errázuriz became the president of Chile. As president, he made many important changes. These changes helped to separate public education from the church. They also gave people more freedom to choose their religion.
He changed the country's main rules, called the 1833 constitution. This was done through a law that was much discussed in parliament. He also removed special rights that the church had.
Improvements and Progress
President Errázuriz worked hard to improve Chile. He built several new railways in the northern and southern parts of the country. These railways helped people and goods move around more easily.
He also organized many exhibitions to show off Chile's industry and art. The biggest one was the Exposición Universal in 1875. This event took place in a beautiful palace. It was built especially for the exhibition in the Quinta Normal de Agricultura park.
Federico Errázuriz also made the navy stronger. He added two new steel warships, the “Cochrane” and the “Blanco Encalada.” He also improved the army. His efforts greatly helped Chile grow and become more successful.
He passed away in Santiago shortly after he finished his time as president.
